Located within the Adaklu district, Adaklu Seva a farming community, has a population of around 720. The main dialect spoken is ewe. The community is challenged with no access to water, light and a health facility.
A visit to the Adaklu Seva primary school in May 2018 visualized students coming to school in tattered uniform and barefooted, learning in thatched structures, where they are exposed to harsh weather conditions which affects safe and conducive environment for effective learning outcomes. A meeting with the village chief, teachers, some parents and community folks revealed that, the school has been in operation for three years and most needs of the school are catered for, through the PTA.
We also identified that, due to the lack of educational infrastructure and basic services, teachers posted tot the school, mostly do not report. At the time of our project, they were only three teachers teaching Kindergarten one (1) to class two (2). They sometimes have to assemble all the students together to teach them.
The teachers also mentioned that the insufficiency of learning and teaching materials, delay in payment of salaries and zero motivation from the assembly to boost the performance of the school has denied the sustainable development of the school.
We also noted, many of these kids after passing through class two, have to go another neighboring community of a long distance to further their education which parents are not happy about. Some parents stated that their inability allow their kids further their education, is because they aren’t enough funds to take them the extra mile. They wished there were more job avenues and entrepreneurial opportunities to assist them invest in their children’s education.
As an organization we realized the community and the school had been neglected and devoid of some basic social services. Our intervention centered on Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our resources only catered for learning and teaching materials and some health items. The extra we did, was to encourage the community, parents, teachers and students to unite, work hand in hand and make the best out of the little they have.
We promised to call on stakeholders, care givers, philanthropists, and development partners to assist in making the school and community sustainable for all and sundry.
